Amen. �REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH AND STUDENT CENTER CHANCEL AREA IN CHAPEL OF REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH �BRIEF HISTORY OF Redeemer Lutheran Church The history of Lutheranism in Nacogdoches began in the year of 1922. In June of that year the Reverend A. J. Niemann, a graduate of the St. Louis Seminary, was called by the Mission Board of the Texas District to serve North­ east Texas Lutherans. In the late fall of 1922 he and the Reverend G. H. Biar, then pastor of St. Mark's Church, Waco came to Lufkin and made a cursory canvass of the city. As far as Pastor Niemann can recall, they did not find anyone "even remotely claiming the name Lutheran." At Nacogdoches they had better success and Pastor Niemann started services there. His home base was at Tyler as he served Trinity Lutheran there and traveled by train and bus to serve the field in Nacogdoches. After a short time the work was dis­ continued in Nacogdoches. The next phase in the work of Lutheranism at Nacogdoches was in the fall of 1939 when the Reverend D. D. Dautenhahn was called to canvass the city of Lufkin and Nacogdoches and to report the findings to the Mission Board. The findings indicated that work should be permanently established in Lufkin and that work at Nacogdoches should be reserved until some future date. The date was April 27, 1940. The following year an article written by the Rever­ end Bewie, at that time mission secretary, appeared in the "Texas Lutheran Messenger" of the Lutheran Witness. It had this to say about Nacogdoches: "Nacogdoches has a population of about 6,000. It fairly oozes Texas History, for it is the oldest settlement in East Texas, having been begun in 1716. Here is also the Old Stone Fort, a home and trading post, built of great brown stones, moved from its original site and now on the grounds of Stephen F. Austin College. This fort was built in 1778. Many flags have flown over Nacogdoches." "We should like to raise the flag of Lutheranism also. But the canvass showed that at present we are not justified in establishing a separate post at Nacogdoches. Our missionary will keep a loving eye on Nacogdoches, hoping that at some future time we shall have reason to enter there also." The field was entered on December 1, 1957, when the Reverend Dewyth Beltz, pastor of First Lutheran Church of Lufkin conducted the first service in the Wesley Student Center which the group rented for Worship purposes. There were 28 people present at this first Lutheran Worship Service which was conducted at 8:00 A. M. At this time the Lutheran group gave themselves the official name of Redeemer Lutheran Church. The following June the Sunday School department was organized by Redeemer Lutheran. Worship Services were con­ ducted at the 8:00 A. M. hour until the first Sunday of October, 1959 when it was changed to 9:00 A. M. This time change was a definite asset to the congregation. In January, 1960 a formal congregation organization was adopted at a meeting which was called to organize an effort to cause the group to grow. The publicizing of the church services and congregations existence was accelerated from that date. The growth was steady and rewarding. Then on April 30, 1961 a letter was received by the Reverend Dewyth Beltz announcing a major gift of monies from the Womens Missionary League of the Texas District Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, to the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Nacogdoches to use to purchase property. Also a large �gift of monies from an anonymous Lutheran Layman given to purchase properties. The announcements were received as a blessing from God and were the key to the future of the congregations development. Several months of exploration started immediately and was climaxed by the purchase of the former residence of the Thomas Bakers at 1801 North Street in Nacogdoches, to be transferred to the church January 1, 1962. Planning the details of the renovation and remodeling of the property took until January 18 when at the Regular Annual Meeting of the congregation a complete plan was adopted. Work by congregation members began immediately. In addition, many individuals as friends of the congregation, came forth to give many hours of work, great values of talent, energy and interest to make it all possible. The women of the congregation sewed the altar paraments and hangings as well as the curtains and draperies. The men built the chancel area, painted, repaired and renovated. As a whole, much was done that would not have been accomplished if it had been necessary to purchase the labor or talent. Today, March 25, 1962, ends the period devoted to establishing a beginning of the Lutheran Church in Nacogdoches and begins the period of development through dedication to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Agnus Dei-------- --The lamb is a symbol of Christ. It is one of the favorite, and most frequently used symbols in all periods of Christian art "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29 Greek Cross-------- Depicts the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ for all sinners. The circle at the center of the cross represents eternity or heaven which is Christ's gift to all believers. "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures." I Corinthians 15:3 RED Liturgical Color-- The Color of fire, fervor, blood, martyrdom, love victorious truth of Christian teaching based on the blood and righteousness of Christ. The IHS Symbol---- This is an abbreviation of the Greek word for "Jesus." The word "Jesus" means "Savior". GREEN Liturgical Color-- The color color in nature. of the permanence and the freshness of It of of abiding life; reminds us of our Christian our religious dominant eternity, faith, hope. Trefoil and Triangle--This inscription refers to the Holy Trinity--Father, Son, and Holy Ghost." "There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." II John 5:7 VIOLET Liturgical Color-- The color of royal mourning and repentance. The Cross and Crown--The crown, from very early days, has been the mark of victory or distinction. It depicts Jesus as the true Son of God and ruler of heaven and earth. "All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth." Matthew 28:18. The cross reminds us how this Royal Son of God has provided salvation for us through His suffering and death upon the cross. This sym­ bol also suggests the reward of the faithful in heaven. "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." Revelation 2:10 �OTHER SYMBOLISM USED IN THE CHAPEL CROSS-- ——---- The cross is the focal point of the entire chancel area. It is a continual reminder of Christ’s suffering and death upon the cross for the redemption of the world. The wooden cross, suspended from the ceiling, dramatizes the Christ of Calvary, sent from heaven to save lost mankind. The free sus­ pension of the cross suggests that we cannot earn Christ or reach heaven alone, but He freely gives us salvation, miraculously wonderfully, through faith in His redeeming blood. RED DOSSAL CURTAIN-—The red is the color of blood. It especially reminds us of the blood of Christ which was shed for the remission of sins and the salvation of mankind. "The Blood of Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” I John 1:7 ALTAR—---—--------The Altar is supported by three legs to remind us of the one true God, the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. "There is none other God but one." I Corinthians 8:4 "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all." II Corinthians 13:14 PULPIT-------------- Christ is symbolized by the one main support of the pul­ pit, He is the true foundation of the church. "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." I Corinthians 3:11 The four side supports suggest the four corners of the world where the Word of God should be proclaimed. "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15. The upturned book support suggests how the Word of God points us heaven­ ward through Christ. CANDLE STICKS------- The candle sticks were hand made in Palestine from olive wood taken from the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem. The candle light depicts the light of Christ into the hearts and lives of men. Jesus said: "I am the Light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12 The candles are also called sacramental candles symbolizing the true body and blood of Christ which the believer receives in the Lord’s Supper. BAPTISMAL FONT------The font is supported by three legs like the altar symbolizing the Holy Trinity in whose name every person is to be baptized. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Matthew 28:19. The great need by all for baptism is evidenced in scripture: "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
